Abstract/Sommario: This is thè sixth number in thè series called "Princeton studies in international finance", published from time to time under the sponsorship of the International Finance Section of thè Department of Economics and Sociology in Princeton University. The author, Professor James E. Meade, is at present responsible for the teaching of international economics at the London School of Economics. Before the war he was thè author of the World Economic Survey published annually by the League of ...; [Leggi tutto...] This is thè sixth number in thè series called "Princeton studies in international finance", published from time to time under the sponsorship of the International Finance Section of thè Department of Economics and Sociology in Princeton University. The author, Professor James E. Meade, is at present responsible for the teaching of international economics at the London School of Economics. Before the war he was thè author of the World Economic Survey published annually by the League of Nations. During and immediately after the war he was a member, and later director, of the Economic Section in the Offices of the British Cabinet. During the last few years he has given much attention to the theory of international economic policy and to the study of problems of economic union. The Section will provide single copies of the Studies in print (see the inside back cover of this Study) to United States residents on the basis of specific requests accompanied by twenty-five cents to cover mailing and packaging costs. No charge will be made for single copies requested by residents of foreign countries. This series is intended to be restricted to meritorious research studies in the generai field of international financial and economic problems, both policy and theory, which are too long for the journals and too short to warrant publication as books. The Section welcomes the submission of manuscripts for this series. While the Section sponsors the Studies, the writers are free to develop their topics as they will. Their ideas and treatment may or may not be shared by the editorial committee of the Section or the members of the Department (Gardner Patterson, Director).

Abstract/Sommario: This study, like its predecessor, "Debt Servicing Capacity and Postwar Growth in International Indebtedness", is the outcome of regular staff work in the International Bank. It was undertaken to provide an over-all view of the changes in indebtedness and economic conditions of borrowing countries. It is concerned with a short period of three years, 1956- 1958, and is not designed to indicate new trends in the economie growth of less developed countries. It was undertaken to provide an over-all view of the changes in indebtedness and economic conditions of borrowing countries. It is concerned with a short period of three years, 1956- 1958, and is not designed to indicate new trends in the economie growth of less developed countries. The main emphasis in the present study is on low-income countries and it serves to illuminate their experiences in a period marked not only by fluctuations in world economic activity but also by a continuing drive for economic development. The study was prepared initially for internal use, but is being offered in its present form to a wider audience since its conclusions may be of interest in spite of their tentative character.

The present booklet discusses thè behavior of deposit velocity, over the business cycle and over longer periods, with emphasis on the institutional and structural forces determining this behavior. Further discussion of the underlying statistica! series and of some related subjects may be found in Mr. Garvy’s Debits and Clearings Statistics and Their Use, a revised edition of which was published by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System earlier this year. The flow of funds through the economy reflects the rate of turnover of the money supply as well as the size of thè money supply itself. An understanding of the institutional practices and policies which influence the turnover of money is essential to an informed interpretation of the changing credit situation and to an understanding of the monetary framework in which credit policy operates. We are hopeful that this booklet will contribute to such understanding.
